Beautiful Sadness

(Kristie Agee)
Music by Kristie Agee, Lyrics by Kristie Agee and Liz Johnson
"Beautiful Sadness" began to take shape in 2005 when my husband's mother was dying of cancer. This was a very, very difficult time for him as is to be expected. Someone close to my husband advised him to let the tears flow and never hold them back or try to be "strong". It is when we let ourselves truly feel our feelings and grieve that we can find a place of peace. This is the Beautiful Sadness. At first, the song was full of dark images, almost like a person drowning in their own tears. But as I revisited the song over the next few months, it morphed into a song of hope. Then, in the summer of 2007, I shared the unfinished lyric with Liz Johnson and together we completed the song. "Beautiful Sadness" is an anthem of hope during life's most difficult moments.
Beautiful Sadness

Verse One
Let it rain let it pour
Let my heart break open wide and ask for more
For in this sea of no tranquility
Is where I learn to trust and let it be
Let it be

Verse Two
Looked for faith looked for love
Looked the world over but never looked above
And now through sad eyes I gaze at the sky
I surrender all the tears I can’t deny
Can’t deny

Chorus
The beautiful sadness rolls in like the sea
A tide of surrender washes over me
I’ve given up on trying to hold it all in
I loosen my grip and I let the water win
I found myself here
Here in this tidal wave
I found myself here
Here in this beautiful sadness God gave

Verse Three
There is joy I can’t miss
I have learned so much inside this dark abyss
When I lose my way, I’ll stop and I’ll stay
I will let go of my doubt and I will pray
I will pray

Chorus

Verse Four
I found strength through release
I found deep within an everlasting peace
While I ride this wave instead of hoping to be saved
I can look inside and know that I am brave
I am brave

Chorus
